Security is always important – you don’t want to loose your data (or your hard drive) to a faulty backup program, and sensitive information is very much frowned upon even if it’s no longer needed.
There are a lot of good programs out there that will delete the files on the hard drive, and leave nothing behind. Most of them are full-featured, with very capable recovery mechanisms, and many of them are free.
If you don’t like the programs, don’t buy them!
A lot of people don’t realise this, but any of these programs will work on any of the common formats of hard drive, including FAT, NTFS, exFAT, ReiserFS, NTFS, fat32, etc. If you’re looking to destroy the data on the hard drive, just write zeroes to the drive, and remove the power. That’s it!
Cleaning the drive up and formatting it for use is not something that’s necessary, and it could actually make your data easier to retrieve, as the manufacturer’s tool would remove the signature from the disk and you would have more difficultly getting past any security.
There are many, many examples of people just deleting the files on the hard drive and removing the drive from the system – that’s not usually a very secure thing to do – you would have to hardcode the drive ID, and you would have to keep track of where the drive is located physically.
It’s really not worth it for just one piece of data, and you can always reinstall your system in the event you forget what you were doing.
